When we show our “medal collection” with the scores obtained by our wines to producers, journalists and buyers… everyone’s eyes open wide in surprise. For a small estate like ours, having 9 and often 10 wines with scores above 90/100, from the most authoritative wine press in the world, is something incredible. It highlights the enormous work of the entire company: in the vineyards, in the cellar and even in the offices.
If they then ask us <<are these the best scores you have obtained on each wine?>> and we proudly reply <<they are just the scores of the wines currently on sale>> I see a murderous light in the eyes of our fellow producers.
This is because we only have 33 hectares of vineyard and to obtain these results we need to transform every bunch of grapes into a high-level wine. A very, very difficult thing.
Just as it is difficult to get the wine critics who count to taste all the wines, that is, not just Brunello di Montalcino. Great tasters are overwhelmed by bottles to taste. Sometimes Monica Larner publishes photos of the stacks of bottles she has to rate and they are truly impressive.

Donatella Cinelli Colombini celebrates Cantine Aperte on 25-26 May 2024 by offering wine lovers who come to her wineries two different and memorable experiences. Itinerant tastings inside and outside the cellars interspersed with stories, tastings of great Brunello and Orcia Doc wines paired with traditional food.

Here the DOP Tuscan bread made with regional wheat, sourdough and strictly without salt, is accompanied by very tasty Cinta Senese salami (medieval breed of pigs), aged pecorino cheese, extra virgin olive oil from Moraiolo, vegetables grown by the farmers, “Dante’s soup” made with the ingredients that were there in the year 1300 when the great poet passed through this area on his way to Rome.

Nothing is like before covid, not even tourists. At least 4 types of visitors arrive in Italian wineries: the classic wine tourists, therefore the true enthusiasts of the nectar of Bacchus, the majority group who seek recreation in unspoilt nature, the high-spending guests, especially from abroad, who ask for exclusive moments and finally the Taliban of “wines without hands”, ultra-famous or with other extreme characteristics.

On June 26th, Donatella Cinelli Colombini will inaugurate the expansion and restoration of the Fattoria del Colle winery with the blessing of Bishop Stefano Manetti and a “déjeuner sur l’herbe”, for 150 people. Typical Valdorcian dishes will be served accompanied by Brunello, Orcia Doc, Chianti Superiore and Supertuscans. A country party according to the great Tuscan tradition to celebrate the conclusion of a project that allows to increase the quality of wines and transforms the Fattoria del Colle into a wine destination capable of attracting enthusiasts and offering them unforgettable experiences and tastings.
CENERENTOLA WINE UNDERGROUND CELLAR
The main creation is a large underground area intended for the refinement of bottled wines for which 3,366 mc of earth and rock (231 hours of jackhammer by the Edilpellegrini Company) have been moved. The project by architect Silvia Nucci, from the Studio Luigi Rocchi,included a single large room of 450m2 for the aging of bottled wine.
Here the temperature must remain at constant 16°C while in the area for sparkling wine it drops to 12°C. It is in this area, separated by panels, that the pupitres have been placed for the manual remuage of the brut rosé classic method obtained from Sangiovese grapes.
A WINTER OAK WOOD TRANSFORMED INTO A CORTEN SILHOUETTE
Outside Donatella Cinelli Colombini asked the designers and artisans who worked at the construction site – all local -, to be inspired by what they saw around them. Donatella is in fact a strong opposer of the “non-places” that take away identity from the territories. From this request and from the long months of lockdown, which have confined everyone around the house, the idea was born to reproduce in metal the oak woods near the Fattoria del Colle.
In winter the noblest trees of the Mediterranean scrub, become a lace of bare branches that rise to the sky. The young architect Elisa Boldi (Coima) designed them as silhouettes and cut them with laser on iron slabs making them then get rusty so that they had the same colour as the trees. Finally, the corten forest has been put, for 50 meters, around the new cellar and delimits the panoramic terrace above.
The silhouettes of the oaks allowed the designer Silvia Nucci to create continuity between the new building and the pre-existing part with the fermentation room, the bottling area and a farmhouse built about a century ago. In this last building the immersive room has been built, with the antique bottle library and a system of images, sounds and lights that teaches wine lovers to “listen to the vineyards”.

Two young winemakers who will share the responsibility of producing Brunello, Chianti Superiore and Doc Orcia under the supervision of Barbara Magnani who for the past twenty years has been Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s right arm. In medium -long term the idea is to renew the staff. Though at the moment Donatella and Barbara intend to keep the younger staff under Barbara’s wings to strengthen their abilities and to stimulate the desire to innovate without forgetting tradition and nature. <<An alchemy that requires courage, love of the territory and passion for cellar work>> explains Donatella Cinelli Colombini while presenting the two new arrivals. Both are small and minute, they are different though in aspect and in personality. Giada is Tuscan from Asciano, 10 km away from Fattoria del Colle; she has dark long hair and love tidiness. Sabrina Buzzolan comes from Malo Vicenza; she has blonde curly hair and the skin tone of the women by Tiziano.

In their professional journey there are differences too. Sabrina studied at San Michele all’Adige and then in the University in Udine where she got a degree in viticulture and oenology. She began to travel for wine at a very young age with work experience opportunities all over the world. In Antonio T. Palacios Garcìa’ laboratory and then the Erasmus at Universidad de La Rioja.
Harvests in Kooyong Winery in Australia, in France in the Château Guadet, Chateau Puygueraud and in the very famous Chateau Pavie Macquin, followed. Sabrina has also had experiences in Journey’s End in South Africa and in Carrick Wines in New Zealand.
A great formative profile with vast horizon intermingled with period in Italy beginning with a job in the Maculan winery in Breganze up until her arrival at Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s.
Thanks to the languages known Sabrina has paired her role a wine maker in the Montalcino winery Casato Prime Donne with a marketing role. This way she is taking on a profile very close to what Riccardo Cotarella call the winemaker of the future <<who, other than making the wine, knows also how to sell it>>. For this reason she is about to take part in the Wset course and has begun to work side by side with Violante Gardini the estate export manager at wine fairs.
